Chapter 1

Barbara Tart drove home with her daughter's word still ringing in her ears. Aj had said no. Aj had shoved the cash back across the table and walked her mother to the door. For thirty years, Barbara had bought that girl's obedience one favor at a time. Now the girl had a man named Will Ray and a rented flat, and she thought that made her free. Barbara meant to prove her wrong. She let herself into the old two-story house she'd raised Aj in. Dust sat on the porch rails. Inside, the rooms smelled of stale tea. Barbara set down her handbag and pressed a hand to her chest. Her body ticked and hummed, the way it always had. She was built to outlast her daughter. She could wait. But waiting was not a plan. Money handed over could be handed back. She needed a debt Aj could not see coming, and could never repay. She climbed to the bedroom and knelt at the big metal safe in the closet. Her fingers spun the heavy wheel. The door swung open on the one secret she had never told her daughter. Inside sat a plain, worn card. It looked like nothing. It was worth more than the house, the store, and every cent Will Ray had ever earned. Barbara had hidden the fortune for years. She had let Aj believe the family had only pocket money and strings. Now she saw the true shape of it. She would not offer Aj this card. She would spend against it in Aj's name. Her plan came clear. She still held Aj's legal papers, signed long ago when the girl trusted her. Barbara could open credit tied to Aj's inheritance, the inheritance Aj didn't know existed. She would run up debt in her daughter's name and back it with the secret card. Aj would owe a mountain she never borrowed. Refusal would ruin her. Obedience would be the only door left. Barbara carried the card downstairs to the phone. She sat straight and dialed the bank. She gave Aj's full name, Aj's numbers, Aj's history. Her voice stayed warm and grandmotherly. The clerk asked for confirmation of assets. Barbara read the account behind the card. A pause. Then the clerk's tone changed, eager now, calling her ma'am. "A line against the estate," Barbara said. "In my daughter's name. She'll be the one responsible." The clerk approved it. A number came through that made Barbara smile for the first time in weeks. She thanked the woman and set the phone down gently. Aj had cut off the small money. She had no idea the large money even existed. Now it was a chain around her neck, and Barbara held the other end. She slid the worn card back into her purse. Tomorrow she would start spending. Her daughter would learn that the word no had a price.
