Chapter 1

Barry the Banker wanted to run the Storyland Canada Bank someday. But no one at the top knew his name. He processed small loans all day, car payments and roof repairs, numbers too tiny to reach the manager's desk. He wore his brown suede hat to work each morning and told himself the same thing. One big client would change everything. That morning, the big client walked in. A man in a black cape crossed the polished lobby. His purple hair hung in stringy ropes. He did not look at the tellers or the flag by the door. He walked straight to Barry's desk and sat down. "I need a loan," the man said. "A large one." Barry straightened his hat. "Of course, sir. I'm Barry. And your name?" "Desmond." Barry pulled up a fresh form. Desmond wanted two hundred thousand dollars. He said it was to expand his jewelry business. Barry's hands shook a little. This was the loan he had waited years for. This was the number that reached the manager's office. "I'll need to check your accounts," Barry said. Desmond slid a folder across the desk. The papers were clean. His shop earned money. His credit was spotless. Every box Barry needed was already checked. Barry knew the rule. Loans this size went to a senior officer. If he passed it up, someone else would take the credit. His name would vanish again. So he made a choice. He approved it himself. He printed the papers and pushed them forward. Desmond signed without reading. Then he set his pen down and looked at Barry for the first time. "You skipped a step," Desmond said. It was not a question. Barry's throat went dry. "I have the authority." "You don't. But you wanted this." Desmond stood and folded his copy into his cape. "Now you're tied to me." He walked out without another word. By afternoon, the manager stood at Barry's desk holding the file. Barry braced for the worst. Instead the manager smiled. "Two hundred thousand," the manager said. "That's the biggest loan this branch has closed all year. Head office asked who handled it." He paused. "I gave them your name." Barry's heart lifted. His name had finally traveled up the chain. This was the thing he had chased for years. Then the manager set a second paper on the desk. "They want you to manage the account personally," he said. "This Desmond fellow is now your responsibility. Every dollar. Every problem." The manager walked away. Barry looked at the signed papers. He had wanted to be noticed. Now the leadership knew exactly who he was. And so did Desmond.
