Chapter 1

Bastian Thorn wanted one signature more than he wanted air. For two years he had traded barbs with Victoria Calloway across a dozen tables, and every deal ended in a draw. She was the reclusive shipping heiress who controlled half the trade below the waterline, and she never signed anything she couldn't win. Bastian wanted a partnership that bound them for good. But he had nothing she needed, and she knew it. She would laugh him out of the room. So he went down where no one else would go. The abyss traders whispered about a creature that lived in the deepest kelp beds, a black bat marked with pearl-like glow. Collectors chased it for years and came back empty. Bastian spent three nights in the cold dark, wading through fronds of bioluminescent kelp that shimmered blue against his silver coat. He carried no net. He carried patience and a pouch of the small glowing insects the creature fed on. On the third night, it came. The Abyssal Pearl Bat dropped from the black water and hung near his hand. He stayed still. It ate from his palm. By dawn it rode on his shoulder and would not leave. He had tamed the one prize she could not buy. But a rare pet was a gift, not leverage. Victoria did not want charming things. She wanted power. So Bastian used the creature to open a door. A deep-sea salvage clan owed a debt to whoever brought them the bat's nesting map, and Bastian traded them the beast's trust for a single locked box. Inside lay a document sealed with red wax, bound in metal clasps. He read it twice to be sure. A court ruling, sealed and final, granting the deepwater shipping rights that Victoria had fought to control for a decade. Without it, her fleet ran on borrowed permission. With it, she was untouchable. And it was in his hands, not hers. He found her in her office, alone, sleeves rolled, arguing with a ledger. She looked up and smiled the way she always did before she cut him apart. "Come to lose again, Thorn?" He set the sealed ruling on her desk. He said nothing. He watched her read the wax seal, then the first line. Her smile stopped. Her hand went flat on the page as if to hold it down. "Where did you get this," she said. It was not a question. "I have what you need," Bastian said. "Now we talk as partners. Not opponents." Victoria stared at the ruling a long moment. Then she pulled out a chair and pointed at it. For the first time in two years, she was not laughing. "Sit," she said. "And tell me exactly what you want." Bastian sat. He had earned the table. But her eyes had already moved past the deal, measuring how badly he wanted it, and how much that would cost him.
