Bella's Arc

Chapter 1 of 13

Bella opened one blue eye in her cream kitty bed. Something heavy sat on her belly. She did not move yet. She was a kitten with a mission, and that mission was to prove the tiny twins were real. She looked down. A small black bunny toy stared back, holding a tiny scythe. Its green eyes glittered. Bella had never seen it before. Someone had placed it there while she slept. A giggle drifted from across the room. Bella's ears swiveled. Behind the tall plant in the cream pot, two small heads ducked low. Dark hair. Two pairs of shoulders shaking with laughter. Bella's tail went stiff. This was it. Proof. A gift, a witness, a trap she could spring. She crouched, eyes locked on the plant, and launched. She hit the carpet hard. The bunny tumbled off and rolled. The twins were already gone, a flicker of heels vanishing behind the baseboard. Only the bunny remained, grinning up at her with its little skull scythe. Bella stood over it, chest heaving. She had missed them again. But now she had something they had touched. She picked the bunny up in her teeth and marched toward the hall. This time, she would make her person see.
