Chapter 13

Marella stopped in the middle of the carpet, her bare feet quiet, her hand pressed to her mouth. Bella sat between her person and the small arched door, tail curled tight. The jerky lay untouched at her paws. The sparkling crystal fairy stood where the girl had pushed it, glittering in cold blues and hot pinks, every tiny wing catching the lamplight. Marella knelt slowly. She picked up the fairy with shaking fingers. She held it up between herself and the clock. The crystal caught the light and threw small rainbows across the wood. Bella watched her person's face change. The shock softened. Something careful settled in. Marella was not calling Bella silly. Marella was not picking her up. For the first time, Marella was looking at the door like it was a door. The little arched opening had always been a hiding place. Now it looked like a doorway with a threshold, the kind a real home might have a small wreath hung beside. Marella's hand hovered close to the wood. The door cracked. Two small faces peeked out, dark hair messy, brown eyes huge and pink-cheeked. The boy and the girl, side by side, waiting. "If you stop stealing," Marella said softly, "you can stay." Her voice barely shook. She set the crystal fairy down beside the door, a gift returned. Then she rose and walked to the kitchen. She came back carrying a small woven basket full of cheese wedges and golden crackers. She placed it gently in front of the arched door. A welcome. A promise. The twins nodded, slow and serious, two small heads bobbing yes. Bella's tail thumped once against the carpet. She had won. Marella had seen. Marella believed. And yet the twins were not being chased out. They were being fed. Bella's whiskers twitched in offended pride. But then the girl twin met her eyes through the gap and grinned, and the boy stuck out his tongue, and Bella understood. Her entertainment was not over. It was only beginning. Marella scooped Bella up at last, but this time she did not call her silly. She pressed her forehead to Bella's warm fur and whispered, "Thank you, brave girl." Bella closed her blue eyes. The clock ticked. Behind the small door, two tiny voices giggled, already plotting their next harmless mischief. The secret was kept. The home had grown. Bella had been believed. And in the quiet apartment, a kitten, a woman, and two small thieves-turned-neighbors settled in to share one strange, perfect life.
