Chapter 3

Bella came down from the stone circle with the scanner in her coat and a new problem sharp in her chest. Cyndi would come by nightfall. If Cyndi took the scanner again, or worse, found a way to pull the time-work out of Bella herself, the role would have no one to pass to. Bella had waited thirty years for a candidate to walk up that hill. She could not wait anymore. She had to train the ones already under her roof, and she had to do it without any of them knowing what she was choosing them for. The role picks its own. She still believed that. But she could set them in the road where the choosing might find them. She called Silver first. Her oldest daughter came in from the capital before noon, white hair bright against the porch rail. Bella did not mention succession. She said the realm had grown soft on her watch and that Silver had said so herself. She asked Silver to sit at the kitchen table and walk her through three decisions the queen would make differently. Silver did, in short sentences, without softening any of it. Bella listened and asked follow-up questions the way a student asks a teacher. By the second hour, Silver was drawing borders on a napkin and naming the councils she would cut. Bella nodded and poured more tea and did not once say the word training. She took the girls to the back field after Silver left. Goldie stood with the scanner on a flat stone and Sierra stood a step behind her, the small watch at her throat. Bella said she wanted to see how long Goldie could pause a falling leaf, and how cleanly Sierra could slow the second half of the same fall. She framed it as a game. She let them fail three times and then showed them how to link the pause to the slow so the leaf hung and drifted instead of dropping. Goldie held it for five counts. Sierra caught the tail. The leaf touched the grass without sound. Goldie looked at her hands. "That was longer," she said. Sierra said, "We can do six tomorrow." Bella said only that they should rest. That night Bella sat alone at the stone circle with the scanner dark on her knee. She had moved three people one step closer to what they would need, and none of them knew. Silver would rule harder. Goldie and Sierra would hold time together, if the role reached for them. It was not a choice yet. It was a road cut through the grass. Down the ridge, headlights climbed toward the house. Bella stood up. Cyndi was early.
