Bellathor walked through the market with her hood low, hunting any word about the tournament trials. She had signed her name in secret. She had made a promise in secret. But no flyer told her where to go, and no crier called the date. Without the trials, the crown she chased would slip past her before she ever swung a blade. Three dogs trotted past her boots, nosing at a man's heavy satchel. A folded paper slipped loose and fluttered to the dirt. Bellathor knelt and snatched it up. Trial roster. Tomorrow. Dawn at the old stone ring beyond the river. Her hands shook as she read it. She closed her fist around the paper and stopped shaking. She had her answer. Now she only had to survive it.
