Chapter 5

The old plan was dead. Belle needed a new one before Friday. She could not out-plan warmth, so she would have to grow some. But when she reached for warmth, she found nothing there. Years of cold had left her empty. She sat in her classroom after the bell and stared at the sign-up sheet on her desk. A field trip to a children's theater. Rapunzel had begged every teacher to chaperone. Belle had always refused such things. She picked up her pen and signed her name. If warmth would not come from inside her, she would force it from the outside. The theater was a small pastel building ringed with roses. Stepping stones led to the door. Belle stood among her students and folded her arms. She did not know how to be fun. She knew how to correct posture and assign chapters. Her students kept their distance, watching her the way they watched a fire drill. One girl lingered behind the rest. Gracie Dumplingham, the quiet one who read more than she spoke and practiced dance until her feet ached. She clutched a spiral notebook against her chest. Its cover showed a city drawn in ink, marked with a brown coffee stain. "Miss Rousseau," Gracie said. "I can't do the dance part. In front of everyone." Belle almost gave the old answer. Effort first, feelings later. Instead she looked at the girl's white knuckles on the notebook. She remembered Rapunzel's crooked flowers. Showing up. Laughing at ugly things. "Show me the notebook," Belle said. Gracie opened it. Inside were counted beats, drawn in neat rows, every step numbered. "You're counting," Belle said. "That's why it feels wrong. I count too. I count everything." She had never told a student that. "Stop counting. Just move badly on purpose. Once." Gracie stared. Then she took two small steps and spun, off balance, and laughed at herself. Belle laughed too. It surprised her, the sound of it. Not planned. Not performed. "Better," Belle said, and meant it. Mr. Phillips stood near the rose garden with the other chaperones. Belle had not seen him arrive. He was watching her now, and Zip was not beside him. He walked over. "That was kind," he said. "I didn't think you had it in you." The old Belle would have used the moment. She would have leaned in, pressed her advantage. But she was still looking at Gracie, who was spinning again, freer now. "She just needed to stop being afraid of looking stupid," Belle said. "I understand that." Mr. Phillips said nothing for a moment. He looked at her like she was a new person he had not met yet. Then Zip called his name, and he went. Belle stayed with her student. The warmth had not come from a plan. It had come from Gracie. And for the first time, Belle did not care whether Mr. Phillips had seen it.
