Chapter 22

The vase gave Beth power, but not room. She stood in the half-finished nave, the star magic swirling behind her, and stared at the ice wall that split her cathedral in two. The rooms she needed most were behind it. Every time she worked near the frost, something on the other side shifted. She felt it in her teeth. The dormant thing stirred whenever her magic touched the ice. She needed the far rooms to grow her world. But building near them might wake the creature and let it cross. "I can't work here without feeding it," she said. "And I can't leave those rooms empty." The void chef uncoiled from the shadows, star-eyes bright. "You keep waking it," it said. "Rude of you." "I know." Beth rubbed her arms. "I need a way to build on the other side without touching the ice. Without stirring it." A knock came at the cathedral door. Beth froze. Only one person had a bridge into this place, and this knock was too soft. She opened it. A figure stood in the bluebells with a flaming blue and pink star where a head should be. Stellan Vega, the astronomer who catalogued the sky each night. Beth had bought star charts from them once. They never wasted a word. "Your sky is wrong," Stellan said. They held up a folded chart. "I map this world too. A dead spot sits behind your ice. It pulls at the real stars. I came to see why." Beth let them in. Stellan crossed to the frost wall and pressed the chart against it. Lines glowed where the ice met their map. "There," they said, tapping a seam. "The thing behind this feeds on movement. Magic moving. That is why it stirs. You must build without moving magic across the ice." Beth looked at the swirling vase, then the wall. "The void chef slips through seams," she said slowly. "It carries magic without leaking a drop. It ate my trail before." The void chef tilted toward her. "You want me to plant the rooms for you. From the inside. Quiet." "Yes. I shape the magic here. You carry it through and place it. No spellwork crosses the ice. Nothing to wake it." "Price," the void chef said. "Name it." "The star charts." It looked at Stellan. "All of them. I want to taste a sky drawn by hand." Stellan went still. Then they set the folded chart in Beth's palm. "Finish your world," they said. "A dead spot in my sky offends me more than lost paper." Beth gave the chart to the void chef. It swallowed the paper into its starry body and slipped into the ice. She poured magic into its coils as it passed. Through the wall she felt rooms bloom. Floors, a fountain, a ring of planet-carved panels. The dormant thing did not stir once. Half her cathedral lived again. But the void chef now held the map to her entire world.
