Bibblex pressed his palm against the splice chamber's glass, watching the glow pulse inside. The hybrid plant he'd built with help from across the sector was alive, drinking from the cut on his forearm through a thin feeding tube. He'd offered his blood as nutrient stock, expecting nothing new. But the syrup flowing back into the collection vial wasn't red anymore. It ran golden, thick with something his scanner couldn't identify. The plant had changed what it took. The splice itself had become something else overnight. Where yesterday it had been contained in the chamber, now it floated free as a prismatic orb, its surface shifting through cyan, magenta, violet. Droplets fell from it in slow motion, each one leaving a glowing trail. The feeding tube still connected to his arm, but the plant was pulling harder now, drawing more from the wound than he'd agreed to give. He reached for the disconnect valve. His hand stopped halfway. The returned syrup pooled in an old bark-wrapped vessel he'd brought from the dead grove outside. He'd meant it to hold soil samples, but the splice had other plans. The golden liquid inside looked wrong, moved wrong. It reminded him of the candied coating on preserved specimens, sticky and translucent, but it pulsed with its own light. When he tilted the container, the syrup didn't slosh. It reached upward, trying to climb back toward the orb. Bibblex disconnected the tube and wrapped his forearm tight. The orb dimmed but kept floating, kept dripping. The splice had gone past step four without collapsing. It had built the protein bridge he couldn't solve alone, and now it was making something he hadn't designed. He lifted the vessel carefully, watching the syrup respond to his movement. This wasn't the breakthrough he'd planned, but it was the one he had. The plant had learned to change what it consumed into something new, and that meant the dead ecosystems outside might still have a chance.
