Big Mbuna held his place beside the king's perch, blue and white stripes still against the slow drift of the water. King Maxwell leaned close, voice lower than a current, and pressed a task into his ear that no other fin in the reef would ever hear. Big Mbuna did not nod. He only listened, the way he had listened for years, waiting for the day his place beside the king would need no defending. Around them, eyes flicked from the shadows of the coral, already watching. The king finished and drew back. He motioned toward the half-open clam shell pavilion at the reef's quiet edge. Big Mbuna followed him inside. The walls swallowed sound. There, alone, King Maxwell pressed a glowing pendant into Big Mbuna's fin and closed it shut. "Carry this," the king said. "Tell no one what it means." Big Mbuna tucked the pendant against his side. Its light dimmed against his stripes. He felt the weight settle, heavier than any wound he had taken. When he slipped back out, the long green fronds of a kelp cluster swayed across the sand. Shapes moved behind them. He saw the glint of doubting eyes and heard the soft hiss of whispers. They had seen him enter. They had seen him leave. The secret was his now, and so was every gaze that wanted to pry it loose.
