Chapter 4

The chiefs' oath reached the lodge at first light. Bill stood before the great cobblestone fireplace, staring into cold ashes. Five clans marched as one against him. He had days to turn their hate into a pact, or watch his stronghold burn. Lisa found him there, ledger tucked under her arm. "They won't parley," Lisa said. She set the ledger on the broad mantel. "They want blood before they want peace. So give them something bigger than blood." Bill turned. "Speak plain." "A wedding." Lisa met his eyes. She did not soften it. "You take Phosphorus as wife. Openly. Before the chiefs arrive. The Empress they hate becomes the woman under your name and your roof. Kill her, they kill your wife. Every clan law forbids it." Mary rose from the hearthside bench, scaled arms folded. "It binds her to the house they must respect," Mary said. "A raid on a stranger is war. A raid on a patriarch's wife is dishonor. Even united, they won't wear that." Bill weighed it. The plan was cold and it was right. "And if she won't?" Phosphorus answered from the doorway. She stood in her dark armored robes, gold eyes fixed on him. She had heard every word. "You pulled me from the mud when the whole world wanted me dead," she said. Her voice was quiet steel. "I already chose this house. Now I choose you, in front of all of them. Let the chiefs come. They'll find no easy corpse." They married that evening at the fireplace. No priest, no crowd. Lisa spoke the household vow. Mary bound their wrists with copper wire from her scale-work. Bill took Phosphorus's hand and swore protection over her, and she swore herself to the line. Three wives now stood at his back instead of two. The Empress the mountains feared was Ironforge blood. They did not have to wait long. Horns sounded from the pass at dusk. Bill walked out to his gate with Phosphorus beside him, her wings spread, the copper still on her wrist. The five chiefs reined up in the mud, torches high, blades drawn. "Give us the Empress," the lead chief called. "Or burn." "She is my wife," Bill said. "Married under my roof this hour. Cut her down and you murder a patriarch's woman at his own gate. Ride home and tell your clans you did that." The torches wavered. The chiefs looked at one another. The oath they'd sworn had been to kill an enemy, not to break the oldest law of the mountains. One by one, the blades lowered. The lead chief spat, then wheeled his horse. "You've bought a night," he said. "Not a pact." They rode back up the pass. The stronghold still stood. But Bill watched them go and knew the truth in the chief's words. He had stopped the killing. He had not won a single clan. The wedding had shielded his house. Now he had to make five enemies swear to it.
