Chapter 1

Blake McClain counted his money twice at the kitchen table while his four kids slept two to a bed. He had enough to buy land, but not enough to buy land and build on it. The rental held them in three small rooms. His two girls shared a bunk. His two boys shared the other. Every night their elbows and knees fought for space. He wanted a home where each kid had their own room and a yard to run wild. Tonight a man had called with a parcel for sale, and the price fit. Barely. At sunrise Blake drove out to see it. The road ended at a gate. He climbed over and walked a field wet with dew. Then he stopped. A pond sat in the center of the land. Its surface lay flat and glassy, soft at the edges, like a bowl set into the grass. He pictured his boys tossing stones across it. He pictured his girls catching frogs along its rim. The land felt right. But the price took everything. If Blake bought it, he could not build this year. Maybe not next year either. His family would stay crammed in the rental while his savings sat tied up in empty ground. He walked the whole parcel twice. He measured the pond with his eyes and counted the trees along the far edge. He thought about his kids fighting for space every night. He thought about waiting and losing the land to someone else. Blake called the seller from the field. His hand shook on the phone. "I'll take it," he said. "The full price. Today." "Cash clears by Friday?" the man asked. "It clears," Blake said. He hung up and stood by the water. He had the land now. He had the pond and the field and the trees. He had a place for his family to grow. He had nothing left to build with. That night Blake told his wife. She set down the dishes and went quiet. The kids crowded the doorway, four of them stacked by height, waiting to hear. "We own land," Blake said. "A real piece of it. With a pond." His oldest girl grinned. His youngest boy asked when they could move. Blake looked at the three small rooms around them. The bunk beds. The crowded floor. He had no answer. He had bought the dream and spent every dollar reaching it. Now he had to find a way to put a house on it. "Soon," he said. "We just have to build it first."
