Chapter 1

Blaze Furn stood in the hill country clearing with a stoppered bottle in his coat pocket and dirt under his fingernails from stripping bark off three different sycamores that morning. The drink still wasn't right. He'd come this far because instinct kept pulling him back to the same ingredient, the same woody bite that promised something he couldn't name yet. A woman stepped out from between two twisted oaks, a foraging sack over her shoulder and her hands stained green from whatever she'd been gathering. She looked at the bark fragments stuck to his palms and shook her head once, deliberate. "That'll kill your drink," she said. "Sycamore bark turns sour when you burn it. Tannic bite goes wrong." She walked past him to a small hut painted red and orange like sunset through leaves, its roof covered in carved wooden scales. From inside she dragged out a barrel with a plank laid across the top, then set down her sack and started pulling things out. Dried herbs. Roots wrapped in cloth. A bottle filled with something dark amber that caught the light. She uncorked it and the smell hit him first—smoky, sweet, with an edge like burnt honey. "Hill cherry bark," she said. "Smoked slow over green oak. It's what you're chasing." She poured a careful measure into a small glass and slid it across the barrel top toward him. Blaze picked it up and held it to the light. The color was almost crimson, deeper than anything he'd tried. He tasted it. The smoke was there, the bitter finish he needed, but underneath was something warmer, something that didn't fight the other ingredients. It fit. "How much," he said, and she named a price that would take most of what he'd brought. He paid it without arguing. She handed him the bottle and two extra glasses, wrapped them in oiled cloth, and told him where to find her when he needed more. Blaze walked back toward the road with the weight of the bottles in his coat and the taste still on his tongue. He had the piece that was missing. Now he just had to make it permanent.
