Chapter 1

Blue had packed her bag three times before dawn, and now the snow had locked her inside. She was a snow elf, barely grown, and she wanted one thing the elders forbade: to find the ruins of the old humans and read whatever they left behind. Nobody in her village believed the humans were worth remembering. Blue did. She pressed her hand to the frosted window and watched the storm bury the only trails she knew. The drifts rose past the door. Wind howled through the eaves and shook the roof beams. By the old paths, the ruins lay two days north. Now the old paths were gone, swallowed under white. Blue sank onto the floor and pulled her knees to her chest. Her short dress did nothing against the cold creeping through the walls. Something bumped her elbow. Her cub pushed against her side, a dark blue leopard no bigger than a loaf of bread. Tiny bubbles of light drifted from its fur. It carried something in its mouth and dropped it in her lap. The object was round and cold, carved from ice, gold, and silver. Runes along its edge glowed faint green. Blue turned it over in her hands. It looked like a compass, but the needle did not point north. It swung, steadied, and aimed at the far wall. She remembered the stories her grandmother told, before the elders silenced them. The old humans left guides for travelers who lost the trails. This was one. "Where did you find this?" Blue whispered. The cub only blinked its moonlit eyes and batted at the glowing needle. Blue stood. The compass pointed a path that ignored the buried trails entirely. It would lead her straight through open snow, where no path had ever run. The drifts out there would swallow her to the waist. She would freeze before noon. She searched the shelf where her grandmother kept old things. Under a wool blanket she found a ring of pale frost, humming with soft magic. She had never dared touch it. Now she lifted it over her head and let it settle around her body. Light wrapped her like a warm skin. The cold in the room no longer reached her. Blue tied her bag shut. She faced the door and the wall of snow behind it. Her plan was simple and dangerous: leave the known trails forever and trust a human relic to guide her. She shoved the door. Snow spilled across the floor to her knees. The cub leapt onto her shoulder, bubbles trailing. Blue held the glowing compass out and stepped into the storm. The needle burned bright and pointed her north, into the open white where no elf had walked. Behind her, the village vanished in the wind. Ahead, there was no path at all. Only the compass knew the way now, and Blue had chosen to follow it.
