Chapter 1

Borin Frostwalker meant to lead forty people across the ice, and he had no map to do it. His tribe waited outside, packed and hungry, ready to follow him to the lost stronghold his grandfather swore still stood beyond the glacier. Borin stood inside the outpost cabin, a staff in one hand and a fur pouch in the other, staring at bare walls. The old chart he had counted on was gone. He had torn the cabin apart at dawn. Drawers hung open. He knew the glacier ahead hid open crevasses under thin snow. One wrong path and the ice would swallow children, elders, everyone. Without the route, he could not move. Staying meant starving. Guessing meant graves. The door banged open. Thyra came in with snow on her shoulders and her spear in her fist. His sister did not knock, never had. She took one look at the ransacked room and set her jaw. "You lost it," she said. "It was never here." Borin dropped the empty pouch on the table. "Someone took the chart years ago. I was a fool to trust a story." Thyra leaned her spear against the wall. She walked to the hearth and crouched. "Then stop looking for paper." She pointed at the cold stones. Soot stained the chimney throat above the fire. "Grandfather lived here his whole life. He wouldn't write the safe road down. He'd carve it where fire couldn't reach." Borin knelt beside her. He ran his thumb along the chimney stone. Under years of grease he felt grooves. Lines. He scraped the soot with his knife. Marks appeared, scratched deep into the rock. A long snaking channel. Short dashes crossing it. Small pits dug beside the dashes. "The dashes are safe crossings," Thyra said. "The pits are the crevasses." Borin traced the path with one finger, start to finish. The route bent hard away from the straight line he would have walked. The easy-looking center of the glacier was pitted with death. The safe road hugged a ridge far to the side. He pressed a scrap of hide to the stone and rubbed charcoal across it. The marks bled through, dark on pale skin. He had his map now, copied in his own hand. "We leave at first light," Borin said. He rolled the hide and pushed it into his pouch. Thyra picked up her spear. She did not smile. "The ridge road adds three days. We packed food for the short crossing." Borin stopped with his hand on the pouch. He counted the mouths outside in his head. Forty people. Food for a four-day walk. A path that now took seven. "Then we ration from tonight," he said. He opened the cabin door. His tribe turned toward him in the gray light, waiting. He held up the rolled hide so they could see it. He had a road at last. He just was not sure he had enough to carry them down it.
