Chapter 1

Boxington smoothed his whiskers and watched the carriage roll up the drive. Timothy stood beside him, chin high, hands clasped behind his back just as they'd practiced. The boy had come so far in three weeks, but would it be enough? The visitor stepping down wore silk and carried judgment in every movement. Boxington led them to the croquet lawn, where mallets lay arranged beside perfectly placed hoops. Timothy walked three paces behind, silent as morning mist. The noble raised an eyebrow. "A street urchin playing gentleman's games?" Boxington's tail swished once. "Timothy, if you please." The boy stepped forward, selected a mallet with proper grip, and struck the ball through three hoops without a word. He bowed, eyes level with the noble's. The visitor's expression shifted. "Perhaps there's more here than I expected." Timothy's small smile told Boxington everything he needed to know. But Boxington understood that croquet alone wouldn't convince anyone. He gestured toward the pavilion, where a tea set waited on its polished table. Timothy moved ahead and held the door. Inside, he poured from the delicate pot without spilling a drop, his rough fingers steady on the painted handle. He set each cup on its saucer with barely a sound. The noble accepted the tea and sipped. "Remarkable," she said, setting down her cup. "I came expecting a show. Instead, I find genuine transformation." Boxington felt warmth spread through his chest as Timothy stood taller, no longer pretending to be something he wasn't, but becoming it. The noble reached into her coat and pulled out a small mirror with engraved edges. She held it toward Timothy. "Look at yourself, boy." Timothy glanced at his reflection, then back at her. "What do you see?" she asked. Timothy's voice came quiet but firm. "A gentleman, ma'am." She snapped the mirror shut and nodded to Boxington. "You've done the impossible, Sugarfur. This apprentice of yours has earned my recommendation." She placed the mirror in Timothy's palm. "Keep this. Remember what you've become." As her carriage pulled away, Boxington rested a paw on Timothy's shoulder. The real work had only just begun, but today they'd proven it could be done.
