Chapter 4

The garden held green, but Briar Rose felt the flaw under it. Her scepter had changed what the man wanted. It had not touched the hard place inside him that first shut her out. That place stayed sealed. Until she opened it, the false longing could snap, and the rot would return. The grown mourner watched from the wilted rose, her eyes steady on the goddess who made her. Briar Rose left the man sleeping and rose up through the earth, toward the one person who could see what she could not. She climbed past root and stone into the cold. Her mother's castle stood in a hush of frost, its spires white, its ballroom frozen mid-turn. Queen Icilia sat before the great mirror. She did not turn. "You built a leash," Icilia said. "Now it frays." "There's a locked place in him," Briar Rose said. "I cannot reach it. You have the glass that shows what a person truly is." Icilia rose. Frost trailed her hem. "The Mirror does not judge. It reflects. You will see him whole." She looked at her daughter. "You may not like the shape." "Show me." Icilia touched the mirror. Its surface cleared. Briar Rose saw the man not as he lay in her briars, but as he was underneath. A boy at a graveside. A door he had closed on himself long ago. Behind that door sat one thing he had never wanted anyone to want him back to: life. He had come to her to disappear because staying was the wound. The sealed core was not resistance to her. It was refusal of himself. "He blocks you," Icilia said, "because he blocks himself." Briar Rose understood then. She had aimed her scepter at his desire. She should have aimed at the door. She reached into the mirror's image, past the false mourning, and touched the closed place. It did not fight her now. She had seen it. She turned the scepter's power on the sealed core itself and cracked it open. The man, far below in the garden, drew a long breath. For the first time his sleeping face was not slack with grief. The briars did not just hold green. They bloomed. The false leash fell away because it was no longer needed. He was bound to her now through the true center of him, not a phantom pointed at empty air. "It is done," Icilia said. She did not congratulate her. But the grown mourner, watching below, felt her purpose vanish. The man no longer needed her tears. Her folded hands opened. She stood, whole and unneeded, and turned her waiting eyes fully on the empty place where Briar Rose had stood. She had her own wanting now, and no one had given her a reason to stay quiet.
