Chapter 3

They left the shallow flats after dusk and waded east, where the water went black and the reeds grew taller than Thistle. Briar kept her sister's hand tight in hers. The half-voices in the swamp all leaned the same way now, tilting toward one deep hum under the mud. Briar had felt it for years without naming it. One tree at a time would not save the border. If the oldest tree in the swamp woke, the rest might follow on its own current. She told Thistle where they were going. Thistle nodded and did not let go. The elder cypress rose out of the water like a house with its lights off. Moss hung in yellow curtains from its arms. Two hollows in the bark looked down at them like closed eyes. A green seam ran down the trunk, faint, breathing slow. Briar felt the hum climb up through her boots and settle in her teeth. She pulled Thistle in close, pressed her palm flat to Thistle's, and set her ear to the wet bark. The name inside was not a word. It was weather. Storms stacked on storms, root layered under root, a grief older than any Warden. Her knees gave. Thistle caught her under the arm and squeezed her hand until the bones ached. "Stay," Thistle said. "I've got you. Listen." Briar listened. The tree was not sleeping the way the others slept. It was awake behind its eyes and watching them. It weighed the two sisters against the axes in the north, against the burned grove, against every year they had walked past it without stopping. Briar could not say the name. She would break open if she tried. Instead she pushed what she had through Thistle's palm — the forty-four woken trees, the loggers, the sprig of red heartwood still at Thistle's collar with its thin green thread of light. She offered the tree a question, not a command. Will you wake for us. Thistle bent her forehead to Briar's temple and held the offering with her. The hum thickened. The green seam in the trunk brightened, then dimmed, then brightened again, matching their breathing. The elder did not open its eyes. It answered another way. The hum rolled out from the trunk in a slow ring across the black water, and every half-voice in the swamp bent after it, humming in the same key. Not woken. Tuned. Briar felt the trees she had already opened lean toward the elder like children toward a parent. She understood then that the elder would not wake for two girls and a burned grove. It wanted more. Briar stood up in the water on shaking legs. "It's judging us," she said. Thistle wiped mud from Briar's cheek. "Then we give it something to judge." The axes in the north cracked once, closer than before.
