Chapter 1

Brightlee Carter carried the last box up the stairs of his new apartment building and told himself the move was worth it. Three weeks ago his girlfriend had emptied their closet in one afternoon. He had driven north until the road ended in a small town called Permafrost, and he had signed a lease on a one-bedroom without seeing it first. The building was pink and blue and honest about what it was. He wanted a house someday, one with a real stove and a yard, but tonight he only wanted the box down and the door shut. He heard the children before he saw them. Two girls and a boy came thumping down the stairwell, arguing about who got to press the elevator button, and the boy tripped into Brightlee's shins hard enough to knock the box loose. A woman followed a step behind. She had gray hair to her shoulders and a red scarf wound twice around her neck, and she caught the box against her hip before it hit the floor. "Sorry," she said. "They run." She smiled at him, tired and steady, and Brightlee felt the last three weeks fall out of his chest like a coin through a slot. The boy was already tugging her sleeve. The younger girl was staring up at Brightlee's beard. The older girl asked if he was the new one in 3B. "I am," he said. The woman shifted the box back into his arms and told him her name was Charlotte. She said her husband had died two winters ago and that these were her three. She said it plainly, the way you tell someone the number of the bus. Brightlee asked if he could buy her a coffee at the diner to say thank you for catching his box. Charlotte looked at him a long second. Then she said Thursday, four o'clock, and that the kids came with her because there was no one to leave them with. He said good, bring them. He meant it. He walked into 3B and set the box on the kitchen counter and stood at the window looking at the flat white land past the edge of town. He had come here to disappear. Instead he had a Thursday, and four people to show up for, and the sudden clear shape of what he wanted next: a bigger place than this, with room for all of them, out where the ground stayed frozen and a man could build something that lasted.
