Chapter 1
Brooke Shadowcloud opened her shop before dawn, the way she liked. She was a dark fairy, small and quick, with a taste for mischief and things most people feared. She sold the strange curiosities the town could not find elsewhere. She wanted more than a shop crowded with old jars. She wanted every mischievous enchantment she made to reach the one buyer it was meant for. Today, that wish would be tested.
A farmer stood at her counter, hat in his hands. His prize hens had stopped laying. He blamed a curse. He wanted it lifted, and he wanted it lifted now.
Brooke listened. She knew curses. This was not one. Something watched his coop, she guessed, and frightened the birds. She took an emerald necklace from a locked case. Its green stone glowed with a faint inner light, shaped like a spirit with wings. "This reveals hidden watchers," she told him. "Hang it in the coop tonight. Come back at dawn."
The farmer paid and left, doubtful. Brooke smiled. She trusted her work.
At dawn the farmer returned, pale and shaking. The necklace had done its job too well. Its light had exposed a crow perched above the hens. But the crow had not fled. It had followed the farmer straight to her door.
The bird landed on her sill now. Its plumage shone black, with faint colors sliding through the feathers. Its eyes fixed on Brooke with a sharp, knowing calm. This was no ordinary crow. It had watched the coop on purpose. It had wanted the necklace's light to find it.
"You," the farmer whispered, backing toward the door. "You brought it here." He dropped the necklace on her counter and fled, warning the street as he ran.
Brooke stood alone with the crow. It tilted its head, studying her shelves, her jars, her locked cases. It made no sound. It did not need to. It had chosen her.
She reached for the necklace. The crow watched her hand. When she lifted the stone, the spirit inside flickered brighter, pointing at the bird like a compass finding north. The two were linked. The necklace had not merely revealed the crow. It had called it.
Brooke set the stone down slowly. Her heart beat fast, half fear, half delight. She had built her shop to match every enchantment with its perfect buyer. Now an enchantment had gone and found its own owner, and the owner was not a person at all.
The crow hopped from the sill to her counter. It settled there as if it meant to stay. Outside, she heard the farmer's voice rising, telling neighbors her cures brought monsters.
Brooke looked at the bird. "I fixed one problem," she said. "And you're the next."
The crow blinked, patient, and did not leave.
