Chapter 4

Slow was Inbella's rule, and Caelix kept it. Weeks of short visits turned into one invitation he did not expect. She wanted dinner. Not at his palace. Her choice, her way. So he let her lead him to the vine-covered restaurant she loved, and he swallowed the urge to command anything about the night. The owner met them on the veranda. Purple hair, round glasses, a purple tail curled behind her. She wore a stained apron and a small marshmallow creature rode her shoulder. "Inbella," she said, warm and quick. "You brought someone." Her eyes flicked to Caelix, then back. "He behaving?" "So far," Inbella said. Amy laughed and led them to a bay window. Pink flowers framed the glass. Books lined the bench. Beyond the panes stood the towers of the snake kin kingdom. "Best seat I've got," Amy said. She set down bread and left them alone. Caelix sat across from Inbella. In his own courts, every meal was a test of power. Here he only watched her. She read the menu aloud. She teased the strange names of dishes. She stole bread from his plate without asking. He let her. The king who feared being outbuilt felt no need to build anything tonight. Amy brought steaming bowls and asked how the food tasted, and Inbella told her honestly, and Amy grinned like the answer mattered. Caelix ate slowly. He listened. He asked about the book she was writing, the one that kept her up at night. She told him it was almost right. He did not push. He did not mention an heir. When the plates were cleared, Inbella looked out at the kingdom lights. "I had a good time," she said. Plain, no softening. "A real one." "So did I," Caelix said. He meant it, and the truth surprised him. Amy passed by with a tray and pretended not to hear. Inbella turned back from the window. Her pink eyes held his. "Stay tonight," she said. "Come home with me." Caelix went still. His tail did not move across the floor. This was the road he wanted, the mate, the throne with meaning, all of it faster than he had dared hope. Every instinct told him to say yes and hold what he had won. He thought of her rule. Slow. Her way. He thought of how one grabbing hand could break a week of patience. "No," he said. "Not tonight." Inbella blinked. "You're refusing me." "I'm keeping your rule." He reached across the table and touched her hand, light, ready to let go. "When you ask me that, I want it to be slow too. Your way, all the way." She stared at him a long moment. Then she smiled, wide and real. "You keep surprising me," she said. "I hate it." He walked her to her door and left her there. His restraint had won something new tonight. But want gnawed at him on the road home, and he did not know how many more nights he could turn away.
