Chapter 1

Caelum stood at the edge of the training platform, counting wings as they came in for morning brief. His best flier's perch stayed empty. Sixteen messengers folded their wings and waited. The seventeenth never showed. He trained them to carry words between kingdoms that would sooner burn each other's borders than share a table, and every messenger who flew alone knew the risk. He pulled the locator crystal from his belt and held it to the light. The facets pulsed once, twice, then settled on a bearing that pointed northeast toward the old observatory dome. His flier had used that structure as a waypoint on solo runs, a place to catch wind before the final push. The crystal's glow held steady, which meant the last confirmed position was hours old. The route past that point had gone silent. Caelum spread his dragon wings and launched without a word to the others. He flew the route himself, following the crystal's bearing until the observatory dome rose below him. He circled once and found no sign of recent landing. Then he pushed further, into the stretch where contact should have been made. The monolith appeared on the horizon, its amethyst and gold veins catching the morning sun. He dropped altitude and saw the message pouch on the ground, torn open and empty. He landed beside the monolith and turned the pouch over in his hands. No blood. No feathers. Just the pouch, deliberately placed where it would be found. Someone had made sure of that. A blue-scaled serpent coiled near the base of the stone, watching him with orange eyes that held too much intelligence. It didn't move, didn't speak. It didn't have to. The message was clear enough without words. Caelum took the pouch and launched again, flying back to the platform where his team still waited. He set the torn leather on the briefing table without explanation. One messenger sucked in a breath. Another looked away. The route was compromised, and everyone in the room now knew it. He met their eyes one by one, measuring who would hold steady and who would start looking for kingdom gold. The example he'd made of the burned route still hung in the air between them, unspoken but not forgotten.
