Chapter 3

Two days passed before Callum saw the valley rancher again. He was mending a water trough when the man rode up the main drive to his ranch, still sitting straight-backed on that bay horse, still wearing clothes too clean for real work. Callum set down his hammer and watched him come. The rancher dismounted and walked straight toward him. His face was red, and his jaw was set tight. "You've got no business corrupting the mind of a young woman," he said. "She was perfectly willing until you poisoned her against me." Callum stayed where he was. "She makes her own choices," he said. The rancher stepped closer. "You think I don't know what you're doing? Meeting her in secret, filling her head with ideas about choosing her own path?" His voice rose. "Her father would have my head if he knew, and yours too if he found out about you." Callum felt his hands tighten into fists, but he kept his voice level. "What she does isn't your concern anymore." The rancher shoved him hard in the chest. "It's my concern when some nobody rancher with a tainted name ruins my prospects." Callum tried to walk away toward the barn, but the man grabbed his shoulder and spun him around. "I'm talking to you," he shouted. Callum didn't think. His fist connected with the man's jaw, and the rancher went down hard into the dust. Blood started seeping from his split lip. The man stayed down, breathing hard, his clean clothes ruined. Callum stood over him, his knuckles throbbing. "She already gave you her answer," he said. "Now get off my land." The rancher pushed himself up slowly and staggered back to his horse without another word. Callum watched him ride away, knowing what he'd just done would reach Anna Mae's father before sundown. The secret was coming into the light whether he wanted it to or not. Callum walked to the old cattle barn and pushed open the heavy doors. Inside, the air was cool and smelled of hay and weathered wood. He sat on a feed crate and looked at his right hand. The knuckles were already starting to swell. He'd crossed a line he couldn't uncross. The valley rancher would tell his story to anyone who'd listen, and Anna Mae's father would hear Callum's name attached to his daughter's refusal. The very thing he'd been trying to avoid — putting her in danger — he'd just made inevitable. But as he sat there in the dim light of the barn, he realized something had shifted inside him. He'd spent months hiding, meeting her in secret, acting like their feelings were something shameful that needed to stay buried. He'd told himself it was to protect her, and maybe part of it was. But another part was fear — fear of her father's rage, fear of the old wounds reopening, fear of what it would cost them both. Now the choice was made. The rancher's broken tooth lay somewhere in the dust outside, and with it went any chance of keeping quiet. Callum stood and walked back into the sunlight. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wrapped his knuckles, watching the white cloth bloom red where the skin had split. Whatever came next, he wouldn't be hiding anymore.
