Chapter 1

Captain Orange Beard had chased the ghost ship for three years, and he still could not find it. Sailors said the vessel sailed wherever the fiercest treasure hid. He wanted it more than any gold. But legend was all he owned, and legend gave him no heading. He stood at his wheel, staring at empty water, orange beard dripping with spray. His charts were useless. He had circled the same gray waves for a week. His crew muttered below deck. He drank from his flask and found it full again, as always, but the drink did not help him think. He needed a way to feel the ghost ship move. Stories said relics existed for such hunting. He had never found one. Then a lookout shouted. A small island rose ahead, with a cottage shaped like a grinning frog. Its round windows glowed. Captain Orange Beard dropped anchor and rowed ashore. He had nothing left to lose. Inside the cottage, three faeries hovered near the rafters. Their wings threw bright sparks across the stone walls. They were small, sharp-eyed, and plainly used to desperate men knocking. "You hunt the ship that no map holds," the tallest faerie said. She did not ask. She knew. "I do," the Captain said. "I have hunted it until my charts wore blank. Tell me where it sails." The faeries circled him. One touched his hat. Another studied his tired blue eyes. "We cannot give you a heading," the tallest said. "But we can give you a nose." She flew to a shelf and lifted a compass made of pale bone. Its needle spun under cracked glass. Beside it sat a lantern. A ghostly figure drifted inside the glass, trailing pale smoke. "The compass does not point north," the faerie said. "It points to the ship. But the needle sleeps unless the lantern wakes it. The soul inside once sailed that cursed deck. She remembers the way." Captain Orange Beard reached for both. The faerie pulled them back. "A trade," she said. "The soul guides you. In return, you free her when the hunt ends. Break that promise and she drags you under with her." The Captain did not like the price. But empty water had nearly broken him. He pressed his thumb to the lantern glass and swore the oath aloud. The soul inside flared bright. The bone needle jerked, then held firm, pointing east with a steady pull. "Follow it true," the faerie warned. "And remember what you owe." Captain Orange Beard carried the compass and the lantern back to his boat. For the first time in three years, his course was certain. He now knew where the ghost ship sailed. But he had bound his life to a dead woman's bargain, and the needle was already pulling him somewhere dark.
