Chapter 4

Richard sat on the dragon bench beside Alexis. The wolf settled at their feet. Her hand rested near his on the cool gold wood, a breath away. The carved dragons curled under his palm. Outside, the lighthouse blinked red and white through the small window. "You came back," Alexis said quietly. "You always come back." She did not look at him when she said it. She looked at the folded paper birds on the cushion. "Even when you can't." Something in him broke open. He had not heard those words in twenty years. A different voice had said them once, through iron bars, in the wet dark of a ship's brig. Richard had been a boy then, shackled at the wrists and ankles, the heavy chain looped through a ring in the floor. The man chained beside him had asked for one thing before the morning came. Promise me you'll find her. Promise me you'll keep her safe. Richard had promised. By dawn, the man was gone, and Richard had carried the weight of those links ever since — not on his wrists, but lower, in the place where a man stores the things he will die for. He reached into his coat. He drew out a small letter, its edges soft from years of handling. A dark blue wax seal held it shut, pressed with a crescent moon. He had never opened it. He had never needed to. He set it on the bench between them, beside the paper birds. "I made a promise once," he said. His voice was low. "To a man in chains. About a child he'd never see grown." He looked at her then. "That child was you." Alexis did not move her hand. She did not speak. The wolf lifted its head and watched them both, yellow-eyed and still. Richard felt the old shackle inside his chest loosen one link — not break, never break, but loosen. He understood, finally, why he could not stop. Why the sanctuary had to be perfect. Why he had been stalling: because once she was safe, the promise would be kept, and he did not know what a man was after the thing that built him was finished. "Then keep it," Alexis said. Her fingers closed the last breath of space and touched his. "And come back." Richard nodded once. The stalling ended on that bench. Tomorrow he would trade the route. Tomorrow he would buy the walls with no cracks. The letter stayed sealed between them, the promise spoken aloud at last.
