Chapter 5
Caspian swam through the night. By dawn he reached the black rocks Silas had named. Past them, gray water stretched to a low island. He stopped and treaded water. Silas's last words dragged at him. The Warden does not welcome strangers. Two days' swim, and the man might turn him away at the shore. Caspian would arrive unknown, unannounced, with only a leather strip and a gold cuff. He could waste his one lead in a single bad moment.
He needed to warn the Warden first. To send something ahead that said, I mean no harm, and give the man a reason to open his door.
A gull landed on the nearest rock. It watched him with a sharp, patient eye, head tilted, feet planted like it waited for orders. It did not startle when Caspian drew close. Someone had trained this bird. He guessed it carried messages between the island and the mainland. He had nothing to write with, but he had things to send.
He reached to his own throat, where a black pearl hung on a dark cord. He had found it in the wreck's silt and kept it without knowing why. It was rare, sea-dark, the kind of thing only a mer-person would carry. From his belt pouch he took a small charm carved like coral, worn smooth. Together they said what words could not: I come from the sea, and I come in peace.
He tied both to the gull's leg with the cord. "Take these to the Warden," he said. "Tell him someone is coming." The gull shook itself, spread its wings, and rose. It flew straight toward the island and shrank to a white speck.
Caspian waited among the rocks. Cold crept into him. He wondered if he had thrown his only tokens away on a bird that would drop them in the waves. Hours passed. The sun climbed.
Then movement broke the water near him. A dolphin surfaced, close enough to touch. Its fins shone gold, and gilded lines rippled along its gray skin like waves. It circled him once, blew air, and swam a short way toward the island. Then it stopped and looked back, waiting.
Caspian understood. The Warden had sent an answer. Not a refusal, but a guide. The pearl and the charm had been seen and known.
He followed. The dolphin led him around jagged shoals and through a narrow channel he never would have found alone. It swam the safe path, the one that ended at the Warden's door. Caspian's chest ached with something close to hope.
The dolphin surfaced in a quiet cove. On the shore stood a stone house. A figure waited at the water's edge, watching him come, holding the black pearl in one open hand.
Caspian pulled himself onto legs and stood. He was no longer a stranger arriving blind. He was expected.
