Chapter 1

Caspian Tidewhisper hummed the moment the storm hit. He couldn't help it. Underwater his voice ran free, bright and clear, the one song he could never share on land. On land the old curse sealed his throat shut. That was the whole reason he swam to the shore each dusk, hunting a way to break it, hoping someday he could stand beside the girl he loved and sing. Then the storm churned the reef. The current grabbed him like a fist. It flung him over ridges he had never seen, past coral bent flat, until the water spat him into cold, strange dark. He surfaced. No familiar rocks. No glow from his home. The tide had scattered every landmark he knew. Caspian trod water and forced himself to think. He needed a current. Currents always ran toward the deep trenches near his house, a stone cottage sunk beneath a hanging dome of trapped water. Find the pull, follow it home. But every way he turned, the water shoved back. The storm had knotted the tide into chaos. Something slammed into his side. He spun, fists up. A long shape lunged again, sleek and silver-green, jaws open. Then it stopped. It circled close and bumped his shoulder, gentle now. Caspian knew those blue eyes. The eel had followed him as a pup, years ago, before the deep waters swallowed it whole. He had thought it lost forever. "You're alive," Caspian mouthed. The eel pressed its snout to his palm, warm and trembling, the way it used to beg for scraps. The eel darted off, then whipped back, then off again. It wanted him to follow. Caspian hesitated. The dark ahead looked worse, not better. But the eel had crossed this reef a thousand times. It knew currents he couldn't feel. He swam after it. The eel dove low, hugging the seabed where the storm's fury thinned. Caspian matched its path, cutting into a narrow channel between drowned boulders. The water changed. A steady pull caught his tail and carried him forward. The eel had found the current beneath the chaos. They rode it together through the black. Caspian's arms burned. Twice the pull nearly broke, and twice the eel doubled back to nudge him onward. At last a familiar shape rose ahead. His cottage. The great dome of water hung above its stone roof, water spilling down the walls in thin ribbons. Caspian reached the door and clung to the frame, gasping. He was home. The eel coiled beside him, proud and panting. But the storm had done more than move him. Something silver glinted where the flood had torn open the seabed near his steps. A slab of old carved stone, buried until tonight. Words wound across it, half-scoured, ringed by a plant he had only heard warnings about, a vine said to whisper. He touched the letters. They spelled the name of his curse. The storm had uncovered it. Now he had to read it.
