Cassie jogged down a cracked path, arms pumping, trying on the shape of a runner. The park was quiet around her. No guests, no lines, no orders to fill. She had picked jogging this morning because painting hadn't worked, and neither had sorting old tickets. Something had to fit. Something had to make her useful again. She rounded a bend and stopped hard. A small animatronic stood frozen mid-wave, one hand stuck high, the other reaching out like it wanted to shake hers. Its eyes blinked at different speeds. A tiny antenna on its head twitched, then stalled. Cassie stepped closer. The bot's mouth opened and clicked, opened and clicked. She read the dented plate on its chest. Benny. Cassie forgot about jogging. She knelt down, already counting parts, already planning. Here was a problem. Here was someone who needed her. She tried to lift him. He was too heavy. She tried to fold his stuck arm down. It would not move. Cassie sat back on her heels and looked past him. Through the trees, she spotted a rusted building with vines crawling over its walls. A round window stared out like an eye. An old repair shed. Of course. That was where broken bots used to go. Cassie stood up and brushed dirt from her knees. She could not fix Benny here. But she knew where to take him, and she knew, finally, what came next.
