Chapter 1

On the morning Celeste Winters opened her bakery, the oven refused to light. She struck the match again. The wick caught, then died. Outside, the enchanted forest of Lumaria dripped with dawn mist, and her hand-painted sign hung crooked over the door. She had spent every coin she owned on this cottage, a two-story dwelling with a warm shop below and a small home above. Today she meant to fill it with bread and strangers who would leave as friends. Nothing was baking yet. Celeste knelt at the cold oven and rubbed her aching wrists. She was twenty, alone, and far from the town where people knew her name. She had come here for a reason she told no one. The forest held old magic, and she wanted to fold that magic into her cakes and paintings. But magic did not pay for firewood. If she sold nothing today, she could not buy flour tomorrow. Her black cat leaped onto the counter. His fur carried a faint silver shine, like moonlight caught in shadow. He watched her with bright, steady eyes. "Not helping, Moon," she said. Moon jumped down and pressed his nose to the cold iron. He looked back at her and mewed once, sharp. Then he pawed at the small copper pot beside the flour. Celeste stared at the pot. Inside sat the dried petals she had gathered from a rose bush near the cottage, the blooms so bright they seemed lit from within. She had planned to save them for decoration. Instead she crushed a handful into the empty firebox. She struck the match a third time. This time the petals caught. The flame climbed, warm and gold, and did not die. Heat spread through the oven. The whole shop smelled of roses and rising dough within the hour. By noon her shelves held golden loaves and small painted cakes. The door opened. A traveler stepped in, drawn by the smell, and stopped short at the sight of the glowing petals still simmering in the pot. Word spread through the forest fast. By dusk, Celeste had sold every loaf and pressed her last coins into the drawer. She locked the door and leaned against it, tired and grinning. Moon curled at her feet. The bakery was alive. She had proven it could work. Then she looked at the copper pot. Only a few charred petals remained. The magic fire ate them fast, and the rose bush outside held one last bloom. Without those petals, the oven stayed cold, and cold ovens sold no bread. She had built something people already loved. Now she had one day, maybe two, before the fire that made it possible ran out.
