Chapter 1

Chanterelle Sporewhisper sat on a toadstool at the edge of the sheep pen, her orange cap trembling with too many futures at once. She was a mushroom girl, small enough to fit inside a teacup, and one day she meant to grow into the Mother-Mushroom whose spores carried true prophecies across every root and leaf of the forest. Today she could not even sort one vision from the next. A traveler had asked her a simple question at dawn: would his sister recover? Chanterelle had opened her mouth and three different answers had pushed against her teeth. She had sent him away with none. Inside the whimsical textile hall, colorful sheep bumped against bolts of ribbon while a fox in a powdered pink wig pinned lace to a dress form. Vivienne Tailweaver glanced up as Chanterelle wobbled through the doorway. "You look green," Vivienne said. "Greener." "My cap is full," Chanterelle said. "Every vision talks over the others. I nearly told a man his sister would drown, and bloom, and marry a baker. Only one can be true." Vivienne set down her pins. She lifted the sheep off her arm and placed it on the cutting table. "Sit. I have tea. I also have a mural in the back that might help. A customer traded it for six yards of velvet last spring." She led Chanterelle behind a curtain of hanging thread. A tall painting leaned against the wall — ley lines braided in blue and violet, runes glowing along each curve. Chanterelle's cap tingled the moment she saw it. The tangled futures inside her seemed to lean toward the painted lines, sorting themselves like iron filings finding a magnet. "Stand closer," Vivienne said. Chanterelle stepped up until her spores drifted against the canvas. The visions in her cap began to arrange themselves along the painted ley lines. Drowning went one way. Blooming went another. Marrying the baker sat quietly on a third strand, faint, unlikely. She could see which was strongest now. She could see which was only fear. A soft yip came from above. A small winged puppy floated down through a gap in the rafters, fluff bright, tiny wings beating. Coins and clover tumbled in its wake. It landed on Chanterelle's cap and settled there, warm. "That is not mine," Vivienne said. "But it seems to be yours now." Chanterelle felt the creature's luck weave through her spores. The sorted visions grew sharper. She spoke aloud, testing. "His sister will bloom. Not drown. He should bring her lake water and sit with her three nights." The words came out clean. Only one answer. True. She slid off the table. The puppy stayed on her cap. "I have to find him before he leaves the glade," she said. "I sent him away with nothing. He may already be walking the wrong road." Vivienne opened the door for her. The sheep watched them go.
