Chapter 1

Charisma had picked out the wildflowers before she owned the ground to plant them. She stood on the ranger's porch with a fat bundle in her arms, blooms in every color pressed against her chest. For a year she had dreamed of a grove here, an open place where women who loved women could walk together and court under the Heartwood's blessing. But dreaming was not owning. The land belonged to the forest office, and she had no claim to a single foot of it. The cabin behind her wasn't hers either. The ranger had left it empty months ago, so she'd moved into the borrowed rooms. Her dog padded out through the open door and leaned against her leg. She scratched his ears without looking down. Inside, her whole life fit in one small space: a plush yellow chair, a lamp, a little television, a kitchen with a humming refrigerator. Comfortable. Temporary. Not a grove. A truck rumbled up the track. A woman climbed down, clipboard tucked under one arm, boots already caked in mud. She was the forest office clerk, and Charisma had begged three meetings out of her. "You again," the clerk said. She didn't smile. "I told you. This parcel gets sold to whoever files first and pays." "Then let me file," Charisma said. "I have the fee. I've had it saved for months." The clerk flipped a page. "Timber company wants it too. Their offer came in this morning." She tapped the clipboard. "You match it by end of day, the deed's yours. You don't, they clear-cut by spring." Charisma's stomach dropped. She knew the number before the clerk said it. It was more than she had. It was nearly double. She set the flowers on the porch rail. Her savings wouldn't stretch that far. But the cabin she'd been living in held one thing the forest office had forgotten: the ranger's old survey maps, rolled in a cabinet drawer. She'd found them her first week. They marked a spring line running under this whole slope. "The timber company doesn't know about the water," Charisma said. "There's a protected spring under this parcel. You can't clear-cut over a protected spring. Check your own maps." The clerk frowned. She walked to the cabinet Charisma pointed to and unrolled the survey. Her finger traced the blue line. For a long moment she said nothing. "That kills the timber sale," the clerk said at last. "They can't touch it now." She pulled a form from her clipboard and held it out. "Which means the only bid left standing is yours. Sign here." Charisma signed. Her hand shook. The clerk stamped the page, tore off a copy, and pressed it into her palm. "It's yours," the clerk said. "The slope, the spring, all of it." The truck pulled away. Charisma stood alone on the porch with the deed in one hand and the flowers in the other. The ground was hers now. But a protected spring meant inspectors, rules, and eyes on every hole she dug. The grove could finally take root. First she would have to prove she wouldn't drown it.
