Chapter 1

Dickens crossed the bridge into the rookeries at dusk, a worn coat over his shoulders and three days of stubble on his chin. He needed a room close enough to watch the lodging-house doors, the men who came and went, the pattern of money flowing upward to owners who never set foot in these narrow streets. He found it on the third floor of a sagging house that smelled of damp wood and chamber pots. The landlady took his coins without asking questions. The room had one advantage: a large window with multiple panes that overlooked the alley below. Through the glass he could see three lodging-house entrances, their doorways lit by gas lamps as night fell. He pulled a chair to the window and took out his notebook. The first observer arrived at half past seven, a broad man in a respectable coat who entered the nearest house and emerged ten minutes later with a leather pouch. Dickens sketched the man's profile and noted the time. By midnight he had recorded six such visits. The leather-bound notebook held details he could never publish: times, descriptions, the exact rhythm of collection. He wrote in a private shorthand he had developed, each entry compressed into symbols that would mean nothing to anyone who found the book. His pencil scratched across the embossed cover as he added margin notes about the amounts he guessed each pouch contained. At one in the morning, a seventh man appeared beneath the slate archway that marked the alley entrance. Dickens leaned closer to the window panes. This visitor wore a high collar and carried a walking stick. He paused under the gas lamp long enough for Dickens to see his face clearly. The notebook fell from Dickens's hand. He knew that face from church vestry meetings, from charitable committees, from the signature on petitions against vice. The man disappeared into the middle lodging-house. Dickens picked up his notebook with shaking fingers and began to write.
