Chapter 1

Chen Bogwater wanted to build a sect where marsh-born cultivators could brew pills from the fen's poison plants. But this morning the fen was trying to kill him first. Yellow fumes rose from the black water around his weathered brewing hut. He coughed, and each breath scraped his throat raw. The fumes were his own fault. His last batch had cracked its clay pot. Now the poison vapor mixed with the marsh gas and thickened by the hour. He tied a wet rag over his face. It did nothing. His eyes ran. His hands shook on the stirring rod. Chen looked at the bundle of swamp herbs hanging by his door. Damp leaves, twisting stems, purple pods that dripped. He had gathered them to refine, not to breathe. Every marsh cultivator knew these plants were poison. That was the whole point of his work. He wanted to prove poison could be tamed into medicine. He had one other bundle. Sacred cleansing herbs, tied with a natural wrap, gathered on a rare trip past the fen's edge. Green leaves, small pink and yellow flowers. He had saved them for a purification rite he could not yet afford to run. The old array hall stood a full day's walk away, its stone floor carved with cleansing marks. He did not have a day. He had minutes. Chen made a choice. He crushed the sacred herbs into his water pot and set it to boil. Then he leaned over the rising steam and breathed. His chest opened. The burning eased. The clean vapor pushed the poison back from his face, one arm's length, then two. It worked. He nearly laughed. He dragged the pot to the center of his hut and fed it more herbs. The clean steam held the fumes at bay. He could work again. He picked up his stirring rod and turned back to his cracked batch. But the sacred bundle was small. Within an hour, the last flower dissolved. The steam thinned. The yellow fumes crept back across the floor. Chen stared at the empty wrap in his hand. He understood now what he needed. Not a rag. Not one lucky pot. He needed a real cleansing array, the kind carved into that distant stone hall. Without it, no sect could stand here. His cultivators would choke before they ever brewed a pill. Chen banked his fire and packed his tools. He wrapped the cracked pot and the swamp herbs in oilcloth. The fumes would only grow. He could not fight them from inside this hut anymore. He stepped out onto the marsh path and turned toward the far hall, where the cleansing marks were cut into ancient stone. He had to learn how they were made. If he could not, his sect would die before it began.
