Cherry knelt at the edge of the empty lot behind her rental and pressed her palm to the dirt. She came here most mornings before work. She pictured rows of tomatoes, a coop, a porch, a husband sanding a rocking chair while kids ran barefoot. The little glass bottle she'd buried at the corner held a folded note: homestead, love, family. A marker only she knew about. Back inside, she pulled the pink box from her closet shelf. Inside were budgets, seed lists, and a printed page titled 'Year One: 10% saved.' Two checkboxes were ticked. The rest waited. She had no land, no skills, no partner, and a job that ate her daylight. She told herself she was being practical. She knew that was a lie she'd chosen. A pink and blue cloud drifted past her window, soft as spun sugar. She watched it float by and felt her chest tighten. Time was moving. She wasn't. She opened her laptop and typed one sentence into the search bar: beginner canning class near me. Her finger hovered, then clicked. The confirmation email arrived before she could take it back. Saturday, 9 a.m., twenty dollars, bring an apron. Cherry closed the laptop. She had started something. The bundle had cracked open, and one small piece was already moving without the rest.
