Chapter 3

The next morning changed everything. A staff member found the flyer gone from its old spot and started asking questions. Now two workers lingered near the prize counter. They dusted the same shelf twice. They straightened the teddy bears and stared at Chilly too long. One of them pointed at his base. "This old thing keeps clicking," she said. "Maybe we pull the chip." Chilly stood frozen among the ticket prizes and the gumball jars. If they cut his power for good, no one would carry his message. The final show would die in this corner. He could not risk another sound. All day he stayed silent, even when coins dropped in. The workers frowned but stopped watching so hard by closing. Still, one warning stuck in his memory. They meant to open him up tomorrow. The door rattled after dark. Timmy slipped in, backpack bouncing, quick and low. He was the boy who had found Chilly awake the night before, the one who bragged that no one on his street missed a thing. He held up a small brass crank key, turning it so it caught the light. "Look what I got," Timmy whispered. "Found it in the Hargrove garage. Pretty much perfect. This is how we wake up your guitar friend." He grinned and stepped toward the counter. Chilly wanted to warn him. He forced current toward his chest, ready to hum. Then he stopped. A sound now might bring the staff running. Instead he clicked his beak once, sharp, and rolled his eyes toward the shelf above him. The workers had left a note taped there. Timmy leaned close and read it. "Check penguin unit. Remove sound chip." Timmy's face went hard. "They are gonna shut you down. That is just not okay." Chilly clicked twice. Yes. Timmy did not wait. He set the crank key on the counter and dug in his backpack. He pulled out a screwdriver and worked at the bolts holding Chilly's base. "They watch the counter now. So you cannot stay at the counter." His hands moved fast. One bolt dropped. Then another. "I move you, they got nothing to find. No penguin, no chip to pull." The last bolt gave. Chilly tipped forward. Timmy caught him with a grunt and shoved him into a low cabinet behind the ticket machine, out of sight. He stacked spare prize boxes in front. "There," Timmy panted. "They think you got hauled off for repairs. Happens to broken machines all the time." He grabbed the crank key again and stuffed it deep in his pack. "Tomorrow we go to that repair shop. We wake your friend up. Then we find the rest of your band." Chilly sat in the dark cabinet, unbolted for the first time. The staff would find an empty spot at dawn. No chip to pull. And for the first time, he was free to be carried out the door.
