Chapter 1

Chip Browning wanted to open a sweet shop where hungry children could eat for free. He was a small boy the color of a chocolate chip, round and brown, and he had one problem. He had no sugar. He had no flour. His empty bowl sat on the counter, and his hands shook whenever he pictured knocking on a stranger's door to ask. He tried three times that morning. He walked to the market, opened his mouth at the flour seller's stall, and said nothing. His face went hot. He turned around and left. A shop cannot bake without ingredients, and a boy cannot get ingredients if he cannot speak. He sat on a low step and stared at his shoes. That was when a fat old dachshund waddled up and glared at him over crooked glasses. It was Barney Grumwald, the grumpy dog who lived down the lane and complained about everything. He wore a brown vest with too many pockets. "You've been standing at that stall three times," Barney grumbled. "You're scaring the pigeons. Either buy something or go home." Chip opened his mouth. Nothing came out. He looked at his empty bowl, then at his knees. Barney sighed a long, put-upon sigh. "Let me guess. You want to ask for something and your tongue's tied in a knot." Chip nodded, miserable. "Speak up, boy. I haven't got all day and my legs are short." Before Chip could answer, a soft voice reached them. "Chip? Is that you sitting there so quiet?" It was Margaret Henley, his grandmotherly neighbor, coming across the square with a basket on her arm. She always noticed things other grown-ups missed. Her flowered blouse was dusted with flour already, and she smiled the way she did when she brought Chip warm bread over the fence. She set her basket down beside him. "You've had that empty bowl for two days now. I've watched you carry it back and forth." She did not ask him why. She simply lifted the cloth off her basket. Inside sat a sack of white flour and a jar of sugar, tied with string. "I bake more than one old woman can eat," she said. "Take these. You'll do something better with them than I will." Chip's throat closed. He had not asked. He had not managed a single word. Yet here they were. Barney snorted. "See? Didn't even have to open your mouth. Some people get all the luck." Chip hugged the sack to his chest. The flour was heavy and real. His plan was alive again. He whispered, "Thank you," so quiet only Margaret heard it, and her smile widened. But as he stood, the truth sank in. He had flour now, and sugar. He had no oven. His tiny room held a cold, cracked stove that had not lit in years. The ingredients were in his arms, and he had nowhere to bake them.
