Chapter 1

Chloe Mistweaver wanted her fishing shack to become the most trusted trading post on the whole coast. But this morning three fishermen walked right past her door. One spat in the snow. "We know your tricks," he said. "You skim a quarter off everyone." Chloe pulled her cotton mask higher and said nothing. The thin fog around her body curled in the cold air. The men were right. For years she had charmed travelers, then quietly kept a slice of every deal. Now the whole cove knew. No local would trade with a scammer, no matter how good her fish were. Inside her cozy winter house, her grumpy frost cat glared from the windowsill. Chloe counted her coins. Not enough. She counted her crates of salted fish. Plenty. But fish rotted, and reputation did not grow back on its own. She made a plan. If they thought she cheated, she would cheat no one, in the open, where all could see. Outside her house grew a strange tree with icy leaves and frosted fruit. The fruit stayed cold and sweet for weeks. No one else on the coast had it. Chloe filled a basket and carried it to the shore where the boats came in. A girl in bright swimwear was already there, dripping and grinning after a swim, eating ice cream despite the cold. Maggie Summers. She never seemed to feel the frost. She noticed Chloe's basket and pointed. "Those are gorgeous. What do you want for them?" "Nothing," Chloe said. "Try one. Free." Maggie bit into the frosted fruit and laughed. "That's the best thing I've eaten all winter!" She said it loud, the way she said everything. Heads turned along the dock. Chloe raised her voice so the wary fishermen could hear. "Free fruit for anyone. No coins. No tricks. Bring me one honest fish in return, only if you want to." The men hesitated. The spitting one crossed his arms. But Maggie waved him over. "She gave me one for nothing. I watched her." A witness they trusted more than Chloe. One fisherman stepped up. He took a frosted fruit, tasted it, and set a fresh cod on Chloe's crate without being asked. Then another came. By noon her basket was empty and her crate held a dozen fish she had not scammed anyone to get. The spitting man came last. He ate his fruit slowly. "You still owe this whole cove a quarter of what you took," he said. But he traded. Word spread fast. By dusk, people called her the woman with the free frost fruit. Not the scammer. The change was real. But the frosted fruit was rare, and Chloe had given the first batch away. Her one tree could not feed the whole coast forever. To keep her new name, she now needed far more fruit than a single tree could grow.
