Chapter 15

By morning the new track was tracked, layered, and mixed rough. Christopher played it back through the studio monitors and felt his stomach drop. The synth hook cut through fine, but the low end was mud. The drums sat too far back. The song didn't move. It sat there like a machine idling in a garage. Fred came in at nine with coffee and a notepad. He listened to the whole thing without a word. When it ended, he set the cup down carefully. "It's different," Fred said. "That's good. But it doesn't lift." "I know," Christopher said. "Our last one lifted. This one won't leave the ground." Christopher rubbed his face. If they released it like this, Earth would skip it. The chart run would end. Every tower Fred and the others had built would broadcast a song no one wanted to hear. "I need something on top of it," Christopher said. "A vocal line. A melody I don't have yet." He took the mix out to the platform stage past the barn. He needed open air to think. The stage stood empty under the morning light, drums set up, mics on their stands, speaker stacks silent along the wings. He sat on the edge of it with the page in his lap and stared at the four-note hook written across the top. RJ walked up the path from the shed, hands in his pockets, humming. Christopher heard it before he saw him. A short rising figure, then a drop, then a lift. RJ hummed it again, casual, the way a man hums walking to nowhere in particular. "That's it," Christopher said. He was on his feet before he finished the sentence. "That is the perfect tune for what we need!" RJ stopped. "What is?" "What you were just humming. Do it again." RJ frowned, then hummed it. The same rise. The same drop. The same lift. Christopher grabbed the page and wrote it down under the four notes. The two lines fit like a hand in a glove. The hook pushed, the hum answered. The song moved. "Where did that come from?" Christopher said. "Been in my head since yesterday," RJ said. "Didn't know it was for anything." "It is now." They went back to the garage. Christopher laid the synth hook down and RJ hummed the line into the microphone, one take, plain and steady. Christopher doubled it with the guitar. The mix tightened. The drums pulled forward on their own. The song lifted. By afternoon they had a rough master. Fred listened twice through and nodded once. "Send it," Fred said. Christopher walked outside to the field. The towers stood ready along the fence line. He watched the sky and waited to hear what Earth would do with a song built from a broken synth and a tune a man hummed on a footpath.
