Chapter 2 of 7

Claire followed the flag's direction until the trees thinned. The faded pink scrap waved behind her like a hand letting go. Ahead, the ground opened. A hole. Dark, round, and waiting. A rope dropped into it, tied off to a big stone wrapped in old cord. Above the hole sat a small canopy on four wooden poles, the cloth sun-bleached and sagging. Claire knelt at the edge. Her pack slid off her shoulder and thumped beside her. Someone had built this. Someone had climbed down. Maybe to hide. Maybe to live. Maybe to die. Then she saw the jacket. Khaki, folded neat on a flat rock. A rescue badge stitched on the chest, bright as a promise. Her breath caught. A searcher had been here. A real one. She ran her fingers along the rope. It held. The stone held. She thought of climbing down to hide, to rest, to finally stop. But the jacket changed everything. The searcher had gone down. The searcher had not come back up. Claire stood. She did not climb down. She tied her ripped sock to the canopy pole so anyone passing would see, then shouldered her pack. Whoever wore that jacket needed her now. The hunted had become the hunter. She stepped past the hole and kept walking, the rope creaking softly behind her like something breathing.
