Chapter 1
Clara Emmet owned a candle shop and could not make a candle. The pink cottage had her name over the door, wax-drop letters and all. Inside, the shelves stood empty. She had traded her city job, her flat, and most of her savings for this place, sure that pretty shelves and clean windows would draw the whole town of Mothwood through her door. Two weeks in, not one customer had come. There was nothing to sell.
She knelt on the shop floor over a battered pot. A block of wax sat inside, half-melted, half-burned. Her nice shoes were stained with mud from the walk over, and now with grease too. She poured the mess into a jar. It cooled gray and lumpy, the wick leaning like a drunk. She lit it. The flame guttered, smoked, and died in ten seconds.
"That's the sixth," she said to the empty room.
Something thumped against the front window. Clara looked up. A small orange kitten clung to the glass, and where its shoulders should have been, two thin wings beat like a moth's. She had never seen such a thing. She opened the door before she could think better of it. The kitten shot past her ankles and leaped onto the workbench.
"No—that's hot," Clara said.
The kitten ignored her. It nosed at the burned wax, sneezed, and hopped to the open door. It looked back at Clara, then flew a few feet outside and landed. It did this again. Wait, fly, land. Waiting for her.
Clara followed it because she had nothing better to try. The kitten led her across the grass to a tall tree she had never bothered to notice. Purple flowers filled its whole crown, thick as clouds. The kitten batted at the fallen blossoms, then rolled in them, then looked at her again.
Clara picked one up. It smelled sweet and clean, like nothing in a city shop. She crushed a handful in her fist and the scent grew stronger. An idea landed hard.
She carried an armful of blossoms back inside. This time she melted the wax slow, off the direct flame, the way you'd warm honey. She stirred the crushed flowers through it. She wet the wick and pulled it straight before she poured. Then she waited, hands folded, not touching it.
The candle set smooth and pale purple. She lit it. The flame caught and held. Sweet smoke drifted up and filled the little shop.
The kitten curled on the workbench and watched the light. Clara laughed, the first real laugh in weeks. She had made one candle. One good candle.
One would not fill the shelves. But she reached for the pot again, already counting how many blossoms the tree could spare, and how fast she could pour before the town forgot her shop was even here.
