Chapter 1

Cleo Juniper had promised to write an apology she did not understand. Her stall in Ghostgum held a single stool, a jar of ink, and a page that had stayed blank for three days. People came to her because she found words they could not. But this letter was meant to mend the town's oldest feud, and she had never met either family. She dipped her pen. She lifted it. The ink dried on the nib. A shadow fell across the page. A tall woman ducked under the stall's cloth roof, silver braids swinging, a patchwork vest jangling with tools. Grease darkened her fingers. Cleo knew her by reputation only. This was Vera Knotts, who fixed broken things each spring and fixed each thing exactly once. "You're the letter girl," Vera said. She set a cracked hinge on the counter and did not fix it. "Half the town's betting you can't write it. The other half's praying you can." "I can't write what I don't know," Cleo said. "I don't know what started the feud. I don't know who got hurt." Vera studied her a long moment. Then she reached into a pocket and pulled out a small brass key, worn smooth. "I know someone who'll tell you. He won't talk to me. He might talk to you, because you're a stranger." Her voice caught on the last word. She looked away. She led Cleo to an orchard at the town's edge. Rows of lemon-scented trees stood in the fading light, their slender leaves bright and sharp in the air. A young man knelt among them, pressing soil around a sapling's roots. He looked up with tired brown eyes. Cleo recognized the ache in his face at once. "Silas Bramble," Vera said softly. She did not step closer. He did not either. The space between them felt like a wound neither would touch. Silas told Cleo the story while he worked. Two families, one orchard, one betrayal generations back. A younger sister who left. A door that never reopened. His hands shook as he spoke, and Cleo understood then that he loved someone he was forbidden to love. She glanced at Vera, standing rigid at the row's end, and understood who. A white dog with brown stripes around its eyes trotted between them and sat at Silas's knee. "She belongs to the other family," Silas said, scratching the dog's ears. "She crosses the fence anyway. Youngest one they've got. Tired of the fight, same as me." Cleo drew out her notebook and wrote until the light was gone. She had the wound now. She had names, and losses, and two people who wanted the ending they could not ask for. But when she read her notes back, her stomach dropped. The apology could not come from her. It had to come from one family to the other. And the person who must sign it had sworn never to speak the words at all.
