Chapter 14

The guardian woke at dawn with Clover still beside him. She had watched over him all night. But when he opened his eyes and saw her there, something shut behind them. He rose fast. He straightened his wings. He turned back into the guardian who fixes things and asks for nothing. Clover felt the door close and did not know why. A tiny sound saved them from silence. A fairy mouse hovered near Clover's shoulder, wings whispering like far-off chimes. Thimble had come many times before, always to lead Clover to a hurt creature. Today she carried no urgency. She dropped a single glowing petal into Clover's palm and pointed her fluffy tail toward the old rose vines at the grove's edge. Clover followed. The guardian came too, though he kept his distance. The vines had grown into a great arch of living roses, tall as a hall, petals glowing pale in the morning gray. Beneath it sat a rabbit made of light. Its white fur shone silver-blue. Stars marked its cheeks. Its tail shed tiny sparks. It was not wounded. It only sat there, calm, watching them both. "It isn't hurt," Clover said. "No," the guardian said. His voice went flat. "So it will leave. They all leave once they're well." He looked at Clover when he said it. He was not talking about the rabbit. Clover understood then. He would not let himself believe she would stay. He had built a wall from every creature that had ever left him mended. She was just one more, in his mind, waiting to walk out once her wound was gone. She knelt in front of him. "Watch," she said. She held out the glowing petal to the rabbit. It hopped close and sniffed her hand. It did not run. It did not need her. It stayed because it wanted to. Clover stroked its ears. The rabbit leaned into her palm and its sparks drifted up around them both. "It has no wound," Clover said. "You didn't heal it. It came anyway. It stayed anyway." She looked up at him. "Like me. I finished my debt. The grove is cured. I have no reason left to be here except you. And I'm still here." Thimble landed on the rabbit's back and the two glowed brighter together, wings and fur shimmering under the roses. The guardian's shoulders dropped. The hard set left his face. He knelt beside her, slow, and put his hand next to hers on the rabbit's fur. His fingers touched her fingers and stayed. "No one taught me that," he said quietly. "That something could stay without being needed." "I'm teaching you now," Clover said. He let out a breath he seemed to have held for years. For the first time, he did not brace against her. He let himself believe. The wall was gone. But believing she would stay meant he now had something he could truly lose.
