Cobalt walked through the snow with seventeen people behind him who had nowhere else to go. The old warehouse had burned three nights ago, and now they needed walls again. He didn't count the hours or measure the cold. He just kept moving until they found something that would work. The cabin sat in a clearing at the end of a muddy path. Snow covered the roof and icicles hung from the eaves. It had solid logs, thick walls, and windows that still held glass. Behind him, someone let out a small sound of relief. But the mud told a different story. Fresh paw prints crossed the path in overlapping patterns, too many to count, pressed deep into the soft ground. Cobalt stopped at the tree line. A large stone sat near the cabin door, pale and smooth like captured moonlight. It marked territory the way a flag marked a fort. He knew what it meant. Another pack had gotten here first, and they were strong enough to leave their claim in the open without fear. His people needed this shelter. The other pack already had it. The door opened. Three figures stepped out onto the porch, shoulders wide and eyes cold. The one in front shook his head once, slow and deliberate. No words needed. Cobalt stood still, feeling the weight of seventeen people at his back. He didn't move forward. He didn't turn away. Not yet.
