Chapter 12

Cobalt walked back to the arch alone. The hunters would be dealt with by morning — Arrow had already sent scouts to track them, and Mirabelle's people knew the ridge better than anyone. He'd done what needed doing. Brought the warning. Let others finish it. But when he reached the clearing, someone was already there. A white wolf lay collapsed against the stone wall beneath the cherry blossom tree, blood darkening the snow around him. The scar over his left eye stood out stark against white fur. More blood trailed back across the clearing — not footprints but drag marks, like he'd crawled the last stretch. Cobalt shifted and approached slowly. The wolf's breathing came shallow and uneven. Behind him, pressed into the snow, were tracks. Boot prints. The hunters had been following this one too. Cobalt knelt beside the stranger and pressed his hand against the worst wound — a gash across the wolf's shoulder. "You made it," he said quietly. The white wolf's eye opened, focusing on Cobalt's face, then on the arch behind him. Recognition flickered there, or maybe just relief. Cobalt pulled bandages from the supply cache he'd buried near the gathering stones and started wrapping the wounds. The stranger didn't pull away. He'd come here because he knew what the arch meant — what it offered. Shelter for the ones nobody else would claim. The white wolf shifted slowly to human form, revealing a man with pale hair and the same scar cutting across his face. "Kovu," he said, voice rough. Cobalt nodded once. "Cobalt." He tied off the last bandage and helped Kovu sit upright against the stone wall. Pink petals from the cherry blossom tree drifted down across them both, landing soft on bloodstained snow. In the distance, voices rose — Arrow's pack moving through the forest, hunting the hunters who'd driven Kovu here. Cobalt stood and looked at the arch his pack had built, at the gathering stones arranged in the clearing, at the wounded stranger now sheltered beneath them. He'd stayed here alone to hold this ground for people like this — the ones still running, still bleeding, still searching for somewhere safe. Kovu wasn't the last. There would be others. And when they came, Cobalt would be here. The arch would stand. The work his seventeen had started would continue, even if they'd scattered to other leaders. He wasn't leading a pack anymore. He was holding the door open. That was enough.
