Chapter 1

Cole Brennan wanted one thing: a champion stallion bred right here on his small farm, a name people across Heartblood would speak with respect. But that morning he stood outside the quarantine barn and watched a borrowed mare shiver in her stall. She was the third healthy horse he'd tried to buy in a month. Each one sickened within days. He couldn't build a bloodline on animals dropping around him. He had to know what was killing them first. He pressed a hand to the clear viewing panel. The mare's flanks heaved. Foam wet her lip. Cole had scrubbed every bucket, boiled every rag, and still the sickness came. He couldn't fight what he couldn't name. So he called the one man everyone in the valley named when a horse went down. The vet arrived by noon, gray hair pushed back, stethoscope swinging as he ducked through the barn door. He didn't shake Cole's hand. He went straight to the stall. "You watered these from the creek," the vet said. Not a question. "Same as always," Cole said. "My grandfather used that creek forty years." "Your grandfather didn't have the new hog farm upstream." Ty Fleming crouched, ran two fingers along the mare's gum, then sniffed them. He frowned. "Show me your trough." Cole led him to the pasture enclosure. Ty knelt at the water trough, dipped a glass vial, and held it to the light. A faint green film clung to the surface. He didn't hurry. He tilted the vial, watched the film separate, and nodded once like a man confirming a suspicion he'd carried through the door. "Bacterial bloom," Ty said. "Runoff feeds it. Your horses drink it, their guts turn against them." He capped the vial. "It isn't catching horse to horse. It's the water. Cut the creek off, haul clean water, and the next animal you buy won't sicken." Cole felt his chest loosen for the first time in weeks. "Then I can buy my foundation mare. Start the line." "You can." Ty stood and brushed dirt from his knee. He looked at Cole over his glasses, and his voice dropped. "But hauling water by hand won't hold. That bloom will spread down every low field on your land by summer. You fix the source, or you'll be burying more than horses." Cole looked past him, across the pasture to the fence line where the ground dipped toward the creek. The tainted water ran through the exact meadows he'd meant to raise his foals in. He had his answer. He could buy a healthy horse now. But the poison lived in his soil, and it was moving toward the heart of his farm. "Where's the runoff coming in?" Cole asked. Ty pointed north, toward land Cole didn't own.
