Chapter 6

The bills came due all at once. Cole spread them across the kitchen table and did the math three times. Feed for the mare. Wages for Mark. And now Amy's fee for gentling the stud. He couldn't cover it all. One payment would slip. He picked up the phone and called Amy first, because a broken promise deserved a voice, not a check that never came. "I can't pay you this month," he said. "I'm sorry. The farm can't carry it." He braced for anger. Amy just laughed, warm and easy. She was the trainer Ty had sent, the one who'd read the wild stud's fear better than Cole ever could. "You think I'd walk over one late check?" she said. "Sit tight. I found something last week." She'd been running the chestnut in a far pasture when she stumbled on an old barn behind the tree line. "Big place. Rafters like a church. Give me two days." Cole didn't understand until the trucks started rolling up his lane. Ty came first, then Mark in his mud-caked pickup, then Ernest, hat in hand as always. They swept out the huge old barn together. Amy strung lights across the high beams. Mark hauled in tables. Ernest brought food from every farm he knew. By dusk the great barn glowed, and half the county's farmers filed through the wide doors. "A fundraiser," Amy told Cole, grinning. "For you. For the mare, the stud, all of it." Cole stood frozen in the doorway. He'd spent months asking for nothing, owing everyone. Now the whole room had come to lift the weight off his back. Ernest climbed onto a hay bale and told the crowd Cole's story straight. The poisoned creek. The sick horses. The wild stud with the champion blood. Hands went into pockets. A jar by the door filled and overflowed. Mark passed a second one. Ty auctioned a free round of vet care and a breeder bid it up fast. When the barn emptied, Amy counted the money on a plank table. She counted it twice. "Cole," she said quietly. "This covers what you owe. All of it. And the stud's training. And feed for the mare through winter." There was more left over besides. But the money wasn't the biggest thing that night. Three breeders had pulled Cole aside near the doors. They'd seen the chestnut's bloodline listed on the auction sheet. One raised racing stock. One bred show horses. All three wanted first look at Cole's foal when it came. They left him their numbers and firm handshakes. Cole drove home under a full moon, the debt gone from his shoulders. The mare was safe. The stud's training was paid through the season. His farm had a name now, spoken by people who mattered in Heartblood. He climbed the steps and looked at the empty stalls. They wouldn't stay empty long. Now he had partners waiting, and a promise he had to keep.
