Chapter 1

Cole Lowery read the notice twice, hoping the words would change. The old Lowery spread was going up for sale, and a buyer from the city had already made an offer. Cole had grown up on that land. His father lost it to debt the winter Cole turned sixteen. Ten years of saving, of breaking horses and working other men's fences, had been for one thing. He meant to buy his family's ranch back and make it the finest in the valley. Now a stranger with deeper pockets wanted to take it first. He rode to the auction house before the dust settled on his boots. Inside, Augustus Hammerton stood at the front desk, polishing a wooden gavel with a silk cloth. The auctioneer wore a wine-red coat and a mustache waxed to sharp points. He handled every deal in the valley, and he handled them for whoever paid best. "Mr. Lowery," Hammerton said, not looking up. "I know that face. You want the Lowery land." "The offer isn't signed yet," Cole said. "Give me the chance to match it." Hammerton set down the gavel. "The city gentleman offered eight thousand. Cash, by Friday." He smiled under the waxed mustache. "Can a saddle-worn man like you touch that number?" Cole's stomach dropped. He had six thousand saved. Two thousand short, and three days to find it. "If I bring the full sum before he signs," Cole said, "will you take mine?" "Money speaks louder than history, Mr. Lowery." Hammerton spread his hands. "Bring eight thousand by Friday noon, and the land is yours. One minute late, and I drop my gavel for him." Cole walked out into the hard sun. He had one thing left worth real money. His stallion, the fastest horse in three counties, a mare's son he had raised from a foal. Selling him would gut the ranch dream before it started. A spread needed good stock. But a spread needed land first. He spent two days riding to every buyer who had ever admired the horse. The rancher across the river paid two thousand in cash without blinking. Cole handed over the lead rope with his jaw tight. The stallion looked back at him once. Cole did not look away until the horse was gone. Friday, five minutes before noon, Cole laid eight thousand dollars on the auction desk. Hammerton counted it twice, slow, enjoying it. Then he stamped the deed and slid it across. "The Lowery spread," Hammerton said, "belongs to a Lowery again." Cole held the deed and felt no joy, only weight. He owned the land now. He owned nothing to work it with. No horse, no cattle, no cash. Every dollar was gone. Then he remembered the woman who held the note on his father's old debt. She still lived in the valley, and she carried the Lowery name. Maya. The land was his. But the past came attached to it, and he would have to face her next.
