Chapter 1

Cole Ryder had chased the black stallion for three weeks, and the horse still wouldn't let him inside fifty feet. Every rider in Yellowdust had tried and failed to break it. Cole needed to be the one who did. A tamed stallion like that sold for more than a year of ranch pay. That money could pull his family out of the hole they'd lived in his whole life. He crouched behind the fence rail and watched the stallion graze. The black coat shone like wet coal. Cole moved a slow step closer. The horse's head snapped up. Its ears pinned back. Before Cole could speak soft, the stallion wheeled and bolted to the far end of the paddock. He cursed under his breath. He couldn't study what he couldn't get near. He couldn't learn its habits, its fears, the thing that would earn its trust. The horse read him as a threat and shut the door every time. Then he heard humming behind him. Lilly stood at the gate. She was the schoolteacher who'd moved out from the city that spring, all soft manners and long blonde curls that caught the wind. Most hands figured she'd last one hard winter and run home. Cole figured the same. She pushed the gate open and walked straight into the paddock. "Don't," Cole said. "He'll trample you." She didn't stop. She just kept humming that low, easy tune. She held out one open hand and looked at the ground, not the horse. The stallion's ears came forward. Cole held his breath. The horse walked to her. It lowered its huge head and pressed its nose into her palm. Lilly laughed, quiet and delighted, and stroked its jaw. The animal leaned into her like a dog. Cole stared. Three weeks of failure, and this city girl had done it in three minutes. He climbed over the rail and eased forward. The stallion's head jerked up again. It stamped and backed away from him, ears flat. "Easy," Lilly said. She wasn't talking to the horse. She was talking to Cole. "You're pushing. He feels it." Cole stopped. He looked at her hand still resting on the stallion's neck, at the calm between them he couldn't fake. "How do you do that?" he asked. "I don't want anything from him," she said. "You do." The words landed harder than he liked. He'd spent every hour figuring how to take from the horse. She hadn't tried to take a thing. Cole took off his hat and turned it in his hands. He'd never once asked for help on this ranch. But the only path to that stallion, and to the money his family needed, ran straight through the woman standing beside it. "Teach me," he said. Lilly studied him a long moment. Then she smiled. "Come back at dawn," she said. "And leave the rope at home."
