Chapter 1
Coral had one tide to prove she was a queen, and nothing in her satchel but a fisher's knife and a story no one believed. She swam the last stretch to the reef court with her tail aching, rehearsing the words she had practiced for a year. Her mother had told her the truth on her deathbed: Coral was the lost daughter of the old coral throne, hidden among common folk to keep her alive. The current court sat on a throne that was not theirs. Coral meant to take it back.
The guards laughed when she asked for an audience. A girl with sun-bleached hair and a patched shell top, claiming the coral crown. They let her in only because the regent's court enjoyed a joke. Coral swam between the pillars and faced a hall of nobles who were already smiling.
She spoke her mother's name. She spoke her own. She named the birthmark on her shoulder, a pale spiral the size of a coin, and pulled her hair aside to show it. The regent leaned forward, then leaned back. A birthmark, he said, is not a bloodline. Bring a relic. Bring a witness. Bring a crown. Otherwise, leave. The nobles laughed again, louder this time, and a guard took Coral's arm to steer her out.
She swam until the laughter faded, then kept swimming until the reef gave way to soft weeds and warm springs. A green-haired mermaid was waiting at the edge of a shallow pond ringed with stone and bright flowers. Marina said she had felt Coral coming for three days. She said the water here remembered old blood. She pointed to the surface, where light moved in slow rings.
Coral hesitated. Marina held out a tall staff carved with white diamonds and pressed it into Coral's hands. Speak your mother's name into the water, Marina said. If the pond agrees, it will answer. Coral gripped the staff and leaned over the pool. She said her mother's name. She said her own. The water lit from below. A smaller mermaid rose through the glow, dark curls floating, a luminous crystal cupped in her palms. Pearl set the crystal on the stone rim. It pulsed once, slow, matching the beat under Coral's ribs.
Marina spoke plainly. The crystal only wakes for the coral line. Carry it back, and the court cannot call you a liar. But the regent will know within the hour, and he will send hunters before you reach the reef. Coral closed her hand around the crystal. It was warm. She had wanted proof, and now she had proof, and now she had to survive long enough to use it.
